About Percentage Calculations
Four types of percentage problems
What is X% of Y? → multiply Y by X/100
X is what % of Y? → divide X by Y, multiply by 100
Percentage change: (New − Old)/Old × 100
Find X if Y% of it is Z → Z ÷ (Y/100)
Percentage in everyday life
GST: 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% added to base price
Bank interest: compounded quarterly or monthly
Discounts: "20% off" = multiply price by 0.80
Exam scores: your marks ÷ total marks × 100
Commission: sales × commission rate ÷ 100
Common mistakes with percentages
A 50% increase followed by 50% decrease ≠ no change (results in 25% loss)
Percentage points ≠ percentages: 5% to 7% is +2 percentage points but +40% increase
Calculating percentage of a percentage: 10% of 10% = 1%, not 10%
