Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, every Indian has six fundamental rights as a consumer:

When Can You File a Consumer Complaint?

You can file a complaint when:

  • A company overcharged you beyond the printed MRP
  • A service was not delivered as promised

Where to File a Consumer Complaint

1. National Consumer Helpline

Call 1800-11-4000 (Toll-Free) You can call, chat, or email your complaint here first. Many complaints get resolved at this stage.

2. Consumer Forums (Based on Claim Amount)

Step-by-Step: How to File a Consumer Complaint

Step 1: Send a Legal Notice First

Before going to court, send the company a written notice (registered post) giving them 30 days to resolve the issue. Keep a copy.

Step 2: Gather Documents

  • Purchase receipt / invoice
  • Warranty card
  • Photos/videos of the defect
  • All communication with the company

Step 3: File the Complaint

  • Go to the District Consumer Forum in your city
  • Fill Form A (complaint form — free to download)
  • Pay filing fees (₹100 to ₹5,000 depending on claim amount)
  • Submit with all documents

Step 4: Hearing

You will be given a hearing date. You can represent yourself — no lawyer required for complaints under ₹5 lakh.

Step 5: Resolution

The forum will give its decision within 90–150 days typically.
