How to Prevent Online Fraud in India

Common Types of Online Fraud

1. UPI Fraud

Scammers send a payment request disguised as "receiving money". When you enter your PIN, you send money to them instead of receiving.

Rule: You never need to enter your PIN to receive money.

2. OTP Scams

Fraudster poses as a bank official and asks for your OTP to "update KYC" or "prevent account suspension". Never share OTP with anyone.

3. Phishing Links

Fake websites that look exactly like your bank. Always type your bank URL directly — never click email links.

4. "Refund" Scams

Caller says you are getting a refund and asks you to install a screen-sharing app (AnyDesk, TeamViewer). They then access your banking app.

5. Job/Lottery Fraud

"You won ₹50,000 — pay ₹500 processing fee first." Legitimate prizes never require upfront payment.

What to Do If Money Is Stolen

Time is critical. Act within minutes:

Step 1: Call Your Bank Immediately

Call the 24/7 banking helpline from the back of your card. Ask them to freeze the beneficiary's account. Act within 30 minutes for best results.

Step 2: Call 1930

The National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) can coordinate with banks to freeze stolen funds. Faster than police in financial fraud.

Step 3: File Online Complaint

  • Go to cybercrime.gov.in
  • Select "Financial Fraud"
  • Submit within 24 hours for best recovery chances

Step 4: File Police FIR

Visit your nearest police station with:

  • Bank statement showing the fraud transaction
  • Screenshot/recording of the scam communication
  • Your phone number details

Step 5: Write to RBI

If your bank is unresponsive, escalate to the Banking Ombudsman at rbi.org.in.

Under RBI circular, if you report fraud promptly:
