About Running Pace

Pace vs Speed

Pace is the time taken to cover 1 km (or 1 mile). Speed is distance covered per hour. Runners use pace because it directly tells you how to control your effort during a race. A 6:00/km pace means 10 km/h.

Common race targets for beginners

5K: Under 40 minutes (8:00/km) is a great first target

10K: Under 1:10 (7:00/km) for first-timers

Half Marathon: Under 2:30 (7:06/km)

Full Marathon: Under 5 hours (7:06/km)

Pace training zones

Easy/Recovery: 70–80% of max HR — conversational pace

Tempo/Threshold: 80–90% max HR — comfortably hard

Interval: 90–100% max HR — hard efforts with recovery

Easy runs build your aerobic base — do 80% of your runs easy
