About BMI in India
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It is calculated as weight (kg) divided by height² (m²). While simple to calculate, BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass.
Indian vs Global BMI standards
WHO (Global): Overweight ≥ 25, Obese ≥ 30
ICMR (India): Overweight ≥ 23, Obese ≥ 25
Indians are metabolically obese at lower BMI — higher visceral fat
South Asians have 2–3× higher diabetes risk at same BMI as Europeans
Limitations of BMI
Does not account for muscle mass — athletes can appear "obese"
Does not measure body fat distribution (waist vs hips)
Waist circumference is a stronger predictor of metabolic risk
Men: waist > 90cm is high risk; Women: waist > 80cm is high risk
