How to Check EPF Balance Online – 5 Methods
What is EPF?
The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme where both you and your employer contribute 12% of your basic salary each month. You can check your balance any time using these methods.
Method 1: EPFO Member Portal (Most Detailed)
Website: passbook.epfindia.gov.in
- Go to the portal
- Enter your UAN (Universal Account Number) and password
- Click "View Passbook"
- Download complete transaction history as PDF
Gives you: Complete passbook with every deposit, withdrawal, and interest credited.
Method 2: UMANG App (Easiest on Mobile)
Download: Search "UMANG" on Play Store or App Store
- Open UMANG → Search "EPFO"
- Select "Employee Centric Services" → "View Passbook"
- Enter UAN and OTP
- View current balance and passbook
Method 3: Missed Call (No Internet Needed)
Give a missed call from your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to: 📞 011-22901406
You'll receive an SMS with your EPF balance within 2 minutes.
Requirement: Mobile number registered with UAN must be the same number you're calling from.
Method 4: SMS
Send an SMS from your registered mobile number:
EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899
Replace "ENG" with your preferred language:
- HIN (Hindi), MAR (Marathi), GUJ (Gujarati), BEN (Bengali), KAN (Kannada), TEL (Telugu), TAM (Tamil), PUN (Punjabi), MAL (Malayalam)
Method 5: EPFO App
Download: "EPFO Official" app on Play Store / App Store
Login with UAN → View balance and passbook.
Activating Your UAN (First Time)
If you've never used your UAN:
- Go to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in
- Click "Activate UAN"
- Enter UAN, Aadhaar, and mobile OTP
- Create password
- UAN is now active
Where to find your UAN: On your salary slip, offer letter, or ask your HR department.
Checking PF Without UAN
If you don't have UAN or your employer never gave it:
- Contact your employer's HR — they are required to provide UAN
- Or call EPFO Helpline: 1800-118-005 with your PF account number (from salary slip)
- Or visit the nearest EPFO Regional Office
Transferring PF When Changing Jobs
When you change jobs, always transfer (not withdraw) your PF:
- Login to EPFO portal → "Online Services" → "One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request)"
- Enter current and previous employer details
- Submit — transfer happens in 10–15 working days
Withdrawing PF before 5 years of service incurs income tax on the amount.
